Days activities will be dependent on your arrival time – the afternoon is at leisure to explore the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront or the guide is available to give you an introductory tour of Cape Town and to discuss options for the next few days touring should you have any special interests. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense with the guide facilitating the booking of and transport to meals.
DAY 2: CAPE TOWN (B) (Around Cape Town, 150km)
Breakfast in the restaurant and then your guide will collect you for a full day private tour of Cape Town including a visit to Robben Island, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and a trip up Table Mountain in the cable car. Lunch is at your own expense and taken en-route. Dinner is at your own expense and can be taken at the V&A Waterfront or at your hotel. The Robben Island excursion is a four-hour activity and if in lieu of this you could explore the Winelands area around Stellenbsoch with lunch taken at the Moyo Restaurant (if the weather is bad or you have more of an interest in wine estates) as another option for the day.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens:
Are world-renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape flora it displays and for the magnificence of its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Founded in 1913 the estate covers 528 hectares with 36 of them cultivated in only indigenous South African plants. A peaceful tranquil place to spend a few hours there is also an informative visitor’s centre, various retail outlets, a coffee shop and restaurants.
Table Mountain Cableway:
First opened in 1929 the Table Mountain Cableway has subsequently had three upgrades with the latest in 1997. To date upwards of 18 million passengers have been transported to the summit. The current cable car was imported from Switzerland and there are only 2 other such cable cars in the world, one in Titlis in the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, and one in Palm Springs in America. During the 5 to 10 minute journey, each way to the summit of Table Mountain at 1085 meters the cable car floor rotates giving everyone a 360-degree view of Cape Town and Table Bay. Once on top, there is over 2 km of pathways leading you to views over Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island, the Cape Flats and the Cape Peninsula. The dassie (or Rock Hyrax) is anatomically the closest living relative of the elephant and a close encounter with these furry creatures is almost guaranteed!
The Robben Island Tour includes:
- A return boat trip across Table Bay
- A visit to the infamous Maximum Security Prison
- Interaction with an ex-political prisoner
- A 45-minute bus ride with a guide providing commentary
- The opportunity to explore the Murray's Bay Harbour precinct attractions, such as the Muslim shrine, or kramat, and the Museum Shop
DAY 3: CAPE TOWN (B) (Around Cape Town, 220km)
Breakfast in the restaurant and then your guide will collect you at a pre-arranged time for a full day private tour exploring the Cape Peninsula. The tour starts with a drive along the coast, past Clifton, Camps Bay and Llandudno to Hout Bay. We then travel into the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. The coastline stretches for almost 40 kilometres of Southern Africa’s most dramatic scenery, including the famous promontory of the Cape of Good Hope where we stop and, weather permitting, there is the option to stretch the legs and walk to the lighthouse or to take the funicular railway. Lunch is en-route at your own expense and in the afternoon travel back into Cape Town with a stop at the Boulders Beach African Penguin colony. Dinner is taken at a restaurant at the hotel or the Waterfront for your own expense.
The Cape of Good Hope
So named by Portugal's King John II this area has captured the imagination of European sailors such as Dias who first named it the Cape of Storms in 1488 and later in 1580 Sir Francis Drake who called it the "The Fairest Cape in all the World". Rich in cultural and natural heritage this is one of the top tourist destinations in South Africa and includes the famous Cape Point. En-route to the Cape Point, and once in the reserve, look out for Eland, Red Hartebeest, Bontebok and Zebra. The Cape Point Lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top from where there are spectacular views. For those who wish to grab a bite to eat or do some souvenir shopping the stunning Two Oceans Restaurant and the Tigers Eye Curio Shop are also on site.
